cleanercities.co.uk (Not Cleaner Cities as we are sometime mistakenly called) first appeared on the web on 29th September 2004 as a response to the increasing amount of cigarette and chewing gum litter in our towns and cities. We were not part of the anti-smoking movement, believing people should be free to make their own choices. However we were concerned that the smoking ban would lead to an increase in street litter - (which it now has! - October 2007)

We are a private web based enterprise run by qualified environmentalists (BSc Hons Environmental Science & Policy & BSc Hons Applied Ecology) who share a wealth of experience in community and voluntary environmental projects. We are based in Merseyside, UK. Profits generated from the sale of our products fund the cleanercities.co.uk environmental advice service - a free web based service for the community and voluntary sector.

Our limited resources go surprisingly far (a small office and a few computers powered by juice, a partnership between greenpeace and npower) and we have supported community & voluntary groups, cottage industries & other small business/exporters from all over the world including UK, Nepal, India and Guatemala.

We aim to make a positive impact in all that we do. We source our products from around the world. We particularly try to locate products from small scale producers and co-ops in developing countries through the www. (pictured: Indian Handicrafts Pill boxes)

As a wee small business it is our aim to continue to develop long term business partnerships with suppliers all over the world. We try and locate items that promote local cultures and traditions - for example handicrafts and ritual items that contribute to enabling local customs are passed down through generations of indigenous people in the developing world.

We don't fly all over the world to meet our suppliers. Our international partnerships are maintained through the world wide web - if we jumped on a plane and flew across the world every time we sourced a possible supplier, our carbon/ecological footprint would soon equal that of any other 'global business' or even worse - international jetsetter and hypocrite Bianca Jagger.  We always consider our carbon/ecological footprint in every aspect of our business.

If you are aware of products that contribute to creating a better world, whether through ethical trading or environmental sustainability please click on the link on the left hand menu above, to recommend a product. You may be part of a craft group who produce hand made products or maybe you travel to developing countries with your work - if you would like cleanercities.co.uk to consider stocking a product, please follow the link on the left or click here.

The profits generated from the sale of our products fund the cleanercities.co.uk free web-based ecological and environmental support service. Community and voluntary groups who wish to make a positive impact in their local environments can contact a qualified environmental scientist or ecologist for general web based advice at no charge. Click here for more details.

Although we are a private enterprise - we do not operate for individual profits and exist to support communities, organisations and charities who share our environmental and ethical ethos, who wish to make positive environmental improvements on a local or global scale. We provide community or voluntary groups with access to an ecologist or environmental scientist via our web site.

To maintain our credibility as an independent and impartial environmental resource we  DO NOT seek nor receive any external funding or accept public donations. Our service is funded from the profits generated from the sale of our products.

We choose not to apply for charity status and maintain our position as private but very social enterprise as we prefer to deal with people, not paperwork & bureaucracy! As our name suggests, we carry a small range of environmental products. Our MINI-BIN key rings are ideal for small litter items such as cigarette and chewing gum litter.
